Mission
The Brookline Schools Staff Children's Center (BSSCC) is a high quality early education program serving toddlers and preschoolers of Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury, and Brookline area families. We value the learning that comes from child-directed inquiries, the collaboration that evolves from developing social-emotional skills, and the joy that stems from spending time in nature.
History of the Brookline Schools Staff Children's Center
The BSSCC was started in 1979 by a group of parents who taught in the Brookline schools. For forty years the town provided space for the program in either the Lincoln or Baldwin school. At the end of the 2020 school year, this support ceased and BSSCC relocated to the Learning Center building on the Greek Orthodox Church campus at 162 Goddard Avenue. This site, on the Jamaica Plain / Brookline border alongside Lars Anderson Park, has allowed us to better incorporate nature-based learning as children spend extended time every day in the natural settings this park offers. It has also allowed us to better serve non-school staff families in the Jamaica Plain/West Roxbury area.
Co-op
BSSCC is a cooperative school. Families contribute in a variety of ways such as interviewing teacher candidates, helping with fundraising, and assisting with enrollment. There is a strong sense of community among the families at the center and their assistance in its running helps develop these connections.
